Giorgio Baffo (1694–1768) was a Venetian patrician whose dialect verse was as celebrated as it was scandalous — bawdy, irreverent, and gloriously unprintable in its day. This edition sets his Venetian originals beside fresh English translations, page for page, so the music of the dialect and the meaning sit side by side.

How it was made

The whole edition was built from a single public-domain scan — an experiment in using modern tools to rescue a censored 18th-century poet and set him in clean type. Start to finish:
